The Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet 2026: a record that you gave it

Landlords in England had to give existing tenants the Government's Information Sheet 2026 by 31 May 2026, as the document itself and not a link. What it is, and a short note to record when and how each tenant got it.

England. Checked against the law on 27 September 2026. Information, not legal advice.

When to use this

Use it for a tenancy that started before 1 May 2026 with a written agreement. For those tenancies the landlord had to give every tenant the Government's Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet 2026 by 31 May 2026. This record shows when and how you gave it. If you have not given it yet, the record still helps: give it now and write down the real date.

How to fill it in

  • Get the sheet from GOV.UK. Use it exactly as published: do not edit it, shorten it or retype it.
  • Give the document itself: a printed copy by hand or by post, or the PDF attached to an email or message. A link to the web page is not enough.
  • Give it to every tenant named on the tenancy agreement.
  • Keep proof: the sent email with the attachment, a certificate of posting, or a copy signed by the tenant.
  • Fill in one record per tenancy and keep it with the tenancy file.

Dear [tenant's name],

I enclose the Government's Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet 2026, which explains how the law on your tenancy changed on 1 May 2026. Please keep it with your tenancy papers.

What happens next

Keep the record for the life of the tenancy. If the sheet was given late or not at all, give it now and record the true date; do not backdate anything. Not giving the required written information carries a risk of a civil penalty. If a tenant or the council raises it with you, speak to a landlord association or a solicitor. For new tenancies the written statement of terms does this job: see the written statement checklist.

Questions about this template

Can I send my tenant a link to the information sheet?

No. The tenant must get the document itself: a printed copy, or the PDF as an attachment. A link to the page is not enough.

Who had to get the information sheet?

Every tenant named on a tenancy agreement for a tenancy that began before 1 May 2026, by 31 May 2026.

I missed the 31 May 2026 date. What should I do?

Give the sheet now, record the real date and keep the proof. Never backdate a record. If the council or the tenant raises it, get advice from a landlord association or a solicitor.

Let the PA keep the paperwork.

Upload what you have and it files every document, keeps every date and serves them to your tenant with proof. Free for landlords.
