Gas Safe register

The official register of businesses and engineers legally allowed to work on gas appliances and fittings in Great Britain. Only a registered engineer may do a landlord's gas check.

In short: The Gas Safe Register is the list of engineers approved under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 to work on gas. Anyone installing, servicing or checking gas appliances for payment must be registered. A landlord's yearly gas safety check must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Safety certificates and the home

England. Checked against the law on 5 October 2026. Information, not legal advice.

Regulation 3 of the 1998 Regulations says only a member of the approved class of persons, the Gas Safe Register, may carry out gas work as a business.

Practical checks before an engineer starts:

  • Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card, with their photo, licence number and the kinds of gas work they are qualified for (for example boilers or cookers).
  • Look up the number on the Gas Safe Register's website.
  • Check the engineer's name and number appear on the gas safety record they give you.

Work by someone who is not registered is unlawful and may be unsafe. Tenants can ask to see the engineer's card too.
